The film provided Paul Newman's breakthrough into the first rank of Hollywood actors, but it is instructive to see how important the other actors are; how "The Hustler" benefited by being made before the big-money star was required to appear in almost every shot. Hotsexxxxvideo Playe Watch Video Xxx Yuojizz. George C. Scott , as the cold, vicious gambler and manager Bert Gordon, was appearing in only his third movie. He has the absolute authority we would see again and again: The way he plays against Sarah, with a cruel word here and a whispered suggestion there, is as hard and painful as his order to have Eddie's thumbs broken. Bert is always calculating. When he tells Eddie he's a "loser," we know he says that to goad him to win or push him to lose; he's never just supplying his opinion. Then there is Jackie Gleason , as the legendary pool champion Minnesota Fats--the man Eddie must beat to prove himself the best. Gleason and Scott won Oscar nominations for their supporting performances; what is interesting is that they make equally unforgettable impressions, although Scott has a lot of dialogue and Gleason has only a handful of words, apart from calling his shots. With Gleason it is all presence, body language, the sad face, the concise, intent way he works the table, the lack of wasted moves. He gives the impression of a man purified by pool, who has moved through all the sad compromises and crooked bets and hustling moves and emerged as a man who simply, elegantly, plays the game. He has long ago given up hustling; unlike Eddie, he makes his living by dependably being the best, time after time, so that others can test themselves against him. He is the ruler of a shabby kingdom, and at the end of the film, as Eddie and Bert have their merciless confrontation, he sits passive in the middle of the floor, listening to what he has heard countless times before, knowing that to practice his gift he has to accept this world. The movie was produced and directed by Robert Rossen, a writer from the s who first refused to "name names" when called in the McCarthyite witchhunt, and then changed his mind, said he had been a communist, and named 57 others. Nell Minow. With an exceptional cast - most especially Paul Newman and Piper Laurie in outstanding performances -, this is a profoundly compelling and richly complex character study about an arrogant, self-destructive anti-hero in search of his own "character" and finding it in a most painful way. A very well-done, old fashioned story concerning a drifter Paul Newman who hustles people at the game of pool, but potentially meets his match on the pool board in Minnesota Fats Jackie Gleason , while struggling to keep his relationship with an equally troubled young woman Piper Laurie going. You can probably call a good chunk of what takes place, with a few surprises dished in, but ultimately this movie remains extremely entertaining thanks primarily due to the ensemble performances Newman, Laurie, Gleason, and George C. Scott are all tremendous that raises this somewhat familiar tale well above average territory. It has a lot to say about taking sports too seriously, especially when gambling is involved, and how one could sometimes put sport above relationships with people and the cost that comes with it. Not a flawless film, but darn close to one, and a movie that should be seen by anyone who loves sports like me. A character study of an awesome proportion, it's much more than the theatrical antics of a small time pool hustler. Paul Newman portrays "Fast" Eddie Felson, a hustler who tours the country with his partner conning the money out of men to pay for their next hotel room, booze, and many dames. Still, Eddie has higher aspirations than to be a con man to secure a sizable nest egg, and so he goes up against the biggest fish in the pond, Minnesota Fats, played by the always entertaining Jackie Gleason. Though Gleason isn't a large presence in the film, he is the main goal for Eddie, the motivation for most of the film. It's a complex issue that rears its head in many antihero works, when the main protagonist gives up happiness for something bigger than themselves, and here Eddie is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's truly an actor's film, showcasing the talents of Paul Newman and the very enigmatic and rarely seen Piper Laurie. Both are thrown into many scenes together with very little story and are forced to show the craggy underbellies of each of their characters. Though it drags at times, it's very volatile to watch their relationship, and the sacrifices each puts forth in order to keep Eddie from becoming a washed up has been, yet find some form of happiness. At the very end, it's no longer about the ideal Eddie holds of himself, but escaping the clutches of a system that would keep him underfoot. Both come off as austere and stoic in the face of the storm but in the end they show their true colors, their lack of strength when the hero shows himself above their antics and backroom dealings. Eddie really is the entire film, falling between a mess of a human being into the hero who you root for when he's down by a large sum of money, the crowd starting to disperse, and the sweat and tears mingling on his face. I can't wait to see it in order to compare and contrast, but truly it's this film, so classic, so fraught with tension and sexual ambiguity, that will probably stay with me. The Hustler is seen as a well respected, getting Oscar nominations and making Paul Newman's name as an actor. When Eddie loses badly, Bert refuses to keep staking him. Sarah pleads with Eddie to leave with her, saying that the world he is living in and its inhabitants are "perverted, twisted, and crippled"; he refuses. Bert arrives first and after an awkward exchange, kisses the unamused Sarah; but the scene implies she sleeps with him. Eddie arrives back at the hotel to learn that she has killed herself. He wins game after game, beating Fats so badly that Fats is forced to quit. Bert demands a share of Eddie's winnings and threatens that Eddie will be injured unless he pays. But Eddie says that if he is not killed he will kill Bert when he recovers; invoking the memory of Sarah, he shames Bert into giving up his claim. Instead, Bert orders Eddie never to walk into a big-time pool hall again. Eddie and Fats compliment each other as players, and Eddie walks out. The Tevis novel had been optioned several times, including by Frank Sinatra , but attempts to adapt it for the screen were unsuccessful. Director Rossen's daughter Carol Rossen speculates that previous adaptations focused too much on the pool aspects of the story and not enough on the human interaction. Rossen, who had hustled pool himself as a youth and who had made an abortive attempt to write a pool-themed play called Corner Pocket , optioned the book and teamed with Sidney Carroll to produce the script. The film crew built a dining area that was so realistic that confused passengers sat there and waited to place their orders. All of Gleason's shots were his own; they were filmed in wide-angle to emphasize having the actor and the shot in the same frames. Early shooting put more focus on the pool playing, but during filming Rossen made the decision to place more emphasis on the love story between Newman and Laurie's characters. For example, when Eddie is playing Findley, Eddie is positioned below Bert in a two shot but above Findley while still below Bert in a three shot. When Sarah enters the room, she is below Eddie in two shot while in a three shot Eddie is still below Bert. When Eddie is kneeling over Sarah's body, Bert again appears above him but Eddie attacks Bert, ending up on top of him. Maybe it'd be better if we just leave each other alone. When Bert wants to take Eddie to Louisville for a big-money match with the millionaire Findley Murray Hamilton , Eddie caves in to Sarah's tears and takes her along. Bert sees her as a rival and expertly and mercilessly destroys her in a few days; learning that Eddie's broken thumbs have healed, he says, "I'd hate to think I was puttin' my money on a cripple"--a line aimed straight at Sarah. And when she is drunk and leaning against a wall at Findley's party, he approaches her and says something into her ear, something we cannot hear, that causes her to throw her drink at him and then collapse, and sets in motion the process of her death. That the movie attends to these two supporting actors, gives heft to their rivalry, adds depth and savor to the story. Watching it, we reflect that many modern movies are one-dimensional and linear, telling one story about one character with superficial haste. That's true of the matches between Eddie and Fats. One respected critic writes of "the two climactic matches with Gleason as Minnesota Fats," when in fact the first match, by far the longest, comes at about the one-third mark, and the final showdown between the two men is not given much screen time, although it leads to the perfect coda:. Remembering the movie, I thought the second match was the longer one, lasting all night and into the next day. But Minnesota Fats is such a legendary character and Eddie's need to defeat him so burning that Rossen wisely realizes he doesn't need to replay the first long match to get the effect. This was the fourth film edited by the great Dede Allen her next would be " Bonnie and Clyde " , and she finds a rhythm in the pool games--the players circling, the cuesticks, the balls, the watching faces--that implies the trance-like rhythm of the players..

It is a character drama, it is about the broken American dream like the writer John Steinbeck focused on. Many of the characters are flawed in some way. Eddie is a very arrogant character, who doesn't know where to stop and is almost on the path to self-destruction. Sarah is an alcoholic, who has given up on her dreams. Bert Gordon is a user, a man who only thinks of his own self-interest, an good villain. The Hustler strongest element is the acting, with top performance from all the actors. They made you believe in their characters. The director, Robert Rossen, does a good job, using fading shots, strong fixed shots, adding to the atmosphere and does well filming the pool scenes. They are some problems with the film. It is a little too long and seems unfocused. Just cutting a few minutes properly would have made this a better film. I personally the grim and gritty reality that this film sets out. This is a worthy film from the film noir school. Visit Prime Video to explore more titles. You may have noticed some of the recent changes we have made. Newman gives a restrained, modulated performance, an unusual one in that character development is sought and achieved with utilization only of voice, gesture, intensity. James Powers. Rosen, the co-author, has directed with a sure, economical hand. Newman is first-rate. Stanley Kauffmann. Newman is better than usual; Gleason, as the slit-mouthed, beady-eyed Minnesota Fats, darts among the shabby little pool sharks like an improbably agile and natty whale; and Gambler Scott looks as though he could sell hot-air heat to the devil. The Hustler belongs to that school of screen realism that allows impressive performances but defeats the basic goal of pure entertainment. Variety Staff. A wonderful hymn to the last true era when men of substance played pool with a vengeance. Derek Adams. Under Robert Rossen's strong direction, its ruthless and odorous account of one young hustler's eventual emancipation is positive and alive. Bosley Crowther. Paul Newman is cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson, a swaggering pool shark punk who works his trade in dingy bars and seedy poolrooms, in Robert Rossen's atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel. Sean Axmaker. Dan Jardine. So much more than the ups and downs of one pool player--It's shot in a very realistic way and deals with inner conflict and what it means to be a man. Eric Melin. The movie—which was released 55 years ago today—was respectable too, earning nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and nods to all four main actors , though it only won for its cinematography and set decoration. The comedian, best known for playing working-class loudmouth Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners which he created , had grown up in Brooklyn. Like Rossen, Gleason mixed it up with neighborhood toughs and got to be a pretty good pool hustler. Ever the Method actor, though, he installed a pool table in his apartment and practiced for hours a day in the weeks leading up to filming. Retrieved April 14, The Galveston News. Chicago Sun-Times. With Gleason it is all presence, body language, the sad face, the concise, intent way he works the table, the lack of wasted moves..

Dita naked Watch Video Tula Porno. The film tells the story of a small time pool hustler, Fast Eddie Felson Paul Newman , who had been traveling around America, making a lot of money and wanting to challenge Minnesota Fats Jackie Gleason , the best pool player in America. After initial success, Fats beats Eddie, with him being battered and beaten. He ends up forming a relationship with an alcoholic woman, Sarah Piper Laurie , a woman who is beaten down by life. They both help each other and seem in love, but Eddie does the only thing he can do, hustle, getting himself in dangerous. Scott , a gambler who offers to back Eddie up and give him his chance to beat Fats. The film is considered by some a sports movie, but the film isn't. That was the price he paid to be able to work, and there must be a shadow of that price in the compromises Fast Eddie is asked to make. The Hustler was acknowledged as the sixth best film in the sports genre. The Hustler is credited with sparking a resurgence in the popularity of pool in the United States, which had been on the decline for decades. Mosconi claimed in an interview at the time of the film's release that the character of Minnesota Fats was based on Wanderone, who at the time was known as "New York Fatty". Wanderone immediately adopted the Minnesota Fats nickname and parlayed his association with the film into book and television deals and other ventures. Author Walter Tevis denied for the rest of his life that Wanderone had played any role in the creation of the character. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Hustler original poster. The soundtrack music is too good, in most instances; sadly, there are no cheap jukeboxes playing awful oldies. Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" is an exception; it is a good song, and is used very well in the film. No balls jump off the table or anywhere ; it's a tight, professional picture.
